FIDH is recruiting an FIDH Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva (reference: REP-GEN-11-16)


Location: Geneva, Switzerland (office of the FIDH Delegation to the UN)

Contract and conditions: Long term contract under Swiss law, full-time.
Gross annual salary from 73 000 FCH for a full year of work
Monthly contribution to the financing of a health insurance plan up to 500 FCH
Contribution to the payment of meals and transport in Geneva

FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) is a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to promote respect for the principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. FIDH is a federation of 184 organisations dedicated to the defense of human rights on the five continents.

The FIDH Representative to the United Nations in Geneva works under the responsibility of FIDH’s CEO and under the supervision of the Director for international advocacy. She-he is in charge of:

- Contributing to FIDH strategic planning with the mobilisation of the UN
- Advancing and undertaking FIDH’s advocacy work at the United Nations in Geneva, including the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) and its mechanisms and procedures, treaty monitoring bodies, and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR);
- Organising the participation of FIDH member or partner organisations in UN Geneva-based human rights mechanisms (identification of advocacy opportunities, help in the preparation of alternative reports, media and communications, etc.), and providing them with training on UN human rights mechanisms and advocacy;
- Generating advocacy materials (reports, open letters, briefing notes, position papers, etc.);
- Liaising between FIDH, its member and partner organisations, and UN human rights mechanisms, as well as Geneva-based diplomats and OHCHR officials;
- Representing FIDH in UN meetings, and preparing and implementing the interventions, statements, and advocacy actions of FIDH at the UN Human Rights Council;
- Engaging with the media and developing FIDH’s communication in relation to UN advocacy;
- Drafting the activity reports including reporting to donors, monitoring/evaluating activities;
- Supervising the delegation team and ensuring the daily management of the office.

Minimum requirement of a post-graduate degree in law, political science or international relations and an excellent knowledge of UN human rights mechanisms and international human rights laws and standards;
Minimum of 6 years professional experience, previous experience of at least 2 years in a similar advocacy position;
Ability to represent, negotiate with and accompany the representatives of FIDH member and partner organisations; good public speaking skills;
Fluency in French and English, excellent writing skills in these languages, knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset;
Good sense of initiative and reaction, project management skills, ability to work as part of a team and to deal with urgent cases.
